The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That
Whenever a prominent honors show draws close, you'll find an outcry for introducing fresh award types to recognize unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
- Just some puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games globally and have been for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
